When Lights Collide Chapter 7

Daniel stood, staring after Cara, surprised by her words….

‘What is she doing?’ he wondered to no one but himself.

Grams began speaking to him again, “Son, whatever that woman is up to, she is doing it for you.”  Daniel nodded in understanding as he turned and headed for the window in the office.

It was still open, waiting for him to make his retreat, but he paused.

It felt different.

Daniel stood, focusing on the window and this new found feeling in his chest that something wasn’t right, as a flicker moved past the window.

“What…?” Daniel questioned as he moved closer.

Another flicker, Daniel now could see the difference, someone was in Cara’s backyard.

The flicker was a flashlight.

Daniel, beginning to feel trapped, was also becoming frustrated.

As he stepped closer to the window, he could hear a motorcycle start up in the distance and drive off, Grams spoke again, distracting him.

“It's ok Daniel, that light is here to help, that light  knows the way.” Daniel stopped and shook his head, beginning to think he was losing his mind.

A new voice now, this one, not in his head, spoke gently, quietly, yet urgently, “Hurry up, there’s not much time!”

Daniel paused.  “What is going on!” he wondered in his own head.

Again the voice not in his head spoke, “You will be going to jail if you don’t get out here, now!”

Daniel, still uncertain of what was happening, but knowing he had no desire to go to jail, grabbed the windowsill with both hands and hoisted himself out as he heard heavy footfalls in the hallway beyond the office door.

He landed, cat-like quiet on the AC unit below the window.

“About time” the voice not in his head whispered, “You trying to get yourself arrested?”

Daniel froze, as a shiver of ice ran up his spine.

“Lets don’t sit here like some kinda hood ornament, lets go!” Suddenly Daniel felt a hand on his arm, he tried to flinch away, but he was already on the move as the hand that had grabbed him, pulled him off the AC unit was now dragging him across the yard.

Daniel tried to resist, “This ain’t how I got here!” he hissed at his new found guide.

They were almost behind the garage when they stopped, and his guide, now shining the flashlight in his eyes, stated “You go back the way you came, you get busted, you come with me, and trust that I know what I’m doing, you go free.  Now, you choose, my way or your way?”

Daniel felt frustration well up in his chest, he never asked anyone for help and he hated feeling like he had no choice.

“Fine, then let's go.” Daniel stated as he waited impatiently for his guide to continue on.

“Do you trust me?” She asked.

“What?” Daniel asked, surprised by the question.

“Do you trust me to guide you?” She asked again.

“Not like I have much of a choice.” Daniel snapped as he began to step toward the back of the garage.

The hand of his guide, now on his chest, stopped him in his tracks as she said “You do have a choice Daniel, it's your freewill, what do you choose?”

Daniel, feeling flabbergasted now, could not believe that this was the time to be having this conversation.

Grams spoke in his head again “Hurry up child, choose, there’s not much time!”

Daniel flinched and clenched his eyes closed, shaking his head he responded...  “I trust you,” he stated flatly.

Then, words he had no intention of speaking left his lips, “please help me.”

He looked up at his guide, shocked that things he had not even thought to say would leave his mouth without his permission.

She smiled, “Then let's go.”

She held tight to Daniel’s arm as she led him behind the garage, where she paused.

Daniel looked at her, and was about to ask her why they stopped, until he noticed her eyes were closed.  “What are you doing!?” he whispered sharply.

“Shush!, I’m listening.” she whispered back.

Daniel stood, shaking his head, wishing desperately he could make sense of this night.

He was beginning to wonder if his club brothers had set him up and were having a good laugh at his expense.

Then he remembered the fire truck, the police cars, the fire in Cara’s bathroom and realized that there was no way his MC would have invited the police and fire department to take part in a practical joke.

Daniel wondered how long her listening would last, and began to wonder who she even was, when suddenly she was pulling on his arm again and dragging him through a hedge and into a neighboring back yard.

As he continued to stumble along with her guidance, Daniel began to wonder just what was happening to him, hearing voices, speaking words that he hadn’t even thought of, people showing up to help him, when he hadn’t even asked and hadn’t even done anything to deserve help, from anyone.

His guide, while continuing to drag him, looked Daniel straight in his eyes,

“All things for a reason.” she stated, as if in response to his thoughts.  Then she looked away, following some sort of invisible trail through the darkness.

Then suddenly she was dragging him sideways, up a couple of stairs and onto a back porch, where they stopped.

Daniel turned to look at his guide and thought that maybe she was listening again, until she opened a sliding door and ushered him inside.

He paused, looked at his guide in confusion, and was about to ask her why, when she smiled and said, “Just get in the damn house Daniel.”

Too surprised to do anything but obey now, Daniel stepped through the entrance and into the house.

His dark sight, on high alert now, and if he thought he was surprised and shocked earlier,

He just realized that he just reached a whole new level.
